Produciton managment Assignment

Creating a media Product - Research

Advert Plan:

The PS4 advert will contain a single player, crossing four different gaming universes. In all four worlds the single player will have to face danger and is forced to make a stand. The four genres across the four different worlds are: crime, horror, fantasy and science fiction. We have decided that it would be a good idea to include the four different symbols in each world, the PS4 controller has. This will let the audience know what the advert is about. At the end of the advert we will include PS4 motto "Greatness Awaits." The different symbols all have a specific colour. This will also be included in the advert. So for each world they go into, for example, the science fiction world will be filmed in a blue scene and setting. Just like the fantasy world will be the scene and setting of pink. These colours are included in the controller and would suit the different types of world we have included. Me and Kieren are working together and I came up with an extra part to be added to the advert. I came up with the idea of adding 3D concept into it just to make it a bit more up to date. We both came to a conclusion that we both preferred the original idea rather then adding the 3D idea. Throughout the whole advert there wont be any voice overs as we want it to be climatic and intense. We think the voice over will distract the audience from watching the advert itself.

We have changed our idea as we thought the first idea would of been a bit difficult as the green screen would of been involved. Me and Kieren wasn't confident enough to use green screen so our second idea is:

 Slow fade in.

As the camera slowly fades into the house passageway, we see a young boy entering the kitchen to help himself to the food. With his face stuffed with junk food, he hears the doorbell ring and makes his way towards the door.

Cut in.

The boy opens the door to find a PS4 promotional poster left pinned to his door. After immediately reading the poster, he notices an entire planet has appeared in the sky and the sound of futuristic vehicles echoes from the sky above. Confused & unsettled, he awkwardly shuts the door.

Cut in.

After closing the door, the boy turns back to face his path to the kitchen which is blocked by a man in robes who reveals himself to be a wizard when he emits flames from his hands. The boy slowly walks pass the wizard whilst awkwardly staring at each other. As he passes the wizard, the boy hears the sounds of thugs arguing upstairs over money. Suddenly the gunfire is heard from upstairs, the boy runs into the kitchen, slams the door shut and makes his way to escape through the back yard only to find a legion of zombies standing around in his back yard. The boy simply stares in even greater confusion.

Cut in.

The last scene reveals the boy sat on his bed, frantically purchasing a PS4 console only whilst looking to his bedroom door, with zombified fingers sticking out of it.

For us to analysis the skills we have in our groups we produce SWOT:

Strengths: The strengths I will bring to the production are good camera skills, good editing skills, work well in a team,
Weakness: The weaknesses I have for the production is that im not very good at work on Adobe Illustrator, Kieren has a better knowledge of how to work it so the sketches will be made by him.
Opportunities: Get to go through different skills that I may not of experienced before.
Threats: The weather may be a threat with the equipment being outside and it raining. The cables may set a light.

Production Diary

Week one: We talked about each other strengths and weaknesses. A SWOT analysis.

Week two: We watched different PS4 adverts that other companies had made for an advert festival. We went through a powerpoint withy the different links that the videos were on and watched them. They were all different and had their own put on it. Whether that’s using CGI, green screen or a slogan.

Week three: We have to come up with ideas for our own adverts for a PS4. We had to work in twos, so I’m working with Kieren. We both came up with our own ideas and have written them down. We had to come up with the best idea that we both agreed on.

Week 4: We then did some research into the production of adverts and what job roles are available. We also watched other Playstation adverts that others have made or were actually used for their advert.

Week 5: We finished off the storyboard that we started after thinking of the ideas for our own adverts.

Week 6: We decided to change our idea to fit what we can actually do. We’ve also changed the location. We also both decided that were we being a bit to ambient about the idea and it would be possible with the equipment we have to successfully do this.

Week 7: We then both decided to edit the footage together as a joint effort. Although me and Kieren had our differences we managed to export the video.

Sketches

Here are some sketches of the characters that were in Idea 1 that we won't be using anymore:

This is what our character would look like for the science fiction universe

This is our character for the horror scene of the advert.

Both of these images were made on Illustrator

Research

When is comes to creating a media products you have to do your research. Finding the gap in the market is the best thing to do.

I went onto UKIE to find out which is the best selling media products. The best top selling with the most amount of money put into is Digital console and PC. Customers altogether have put in £1.224BN into this. The lowest price in the gaming market is £6.2M with the events the gaming industry provide. For example, they recently bought out Fifa 17 and for an event of that some people who have gaming channels for the chance to go to the Wembley Stadium. They had set up a few consoles with Fifa 17 on. At the end of it all they got given Fifa 17. This also promotes the game and to make it a bit more enjoyable. Gamescon is also another gaming event that is usually set up every year for mostly gamers to go to trial the new games.

Here are some popular Xbox one games:
GTA Five: https://youtu.be/hvoD7ehZPcM
Call of duty Black opps 3: https://youtu.be/58Pspqx0XGs
The walking dead: https://youtu.be/0FqaCN2aiD0
Battlefield 3: https://youtu.be/FRqfFfuVuNE
Battlefield 1: https://youtu.be/C-vAxVh8ins
Gears of war 4: https://youtu.be/ji2aU4EdQww

Showing the most popular games, the target audience would be for those who play the games and who are old enough to. Most of the games ive listed above are 18's so more people aged 18 and above will be more likely to have these games and console.

Target Audience

As our advert will contain violence, blood, gore and horror, it would be more suitable for a mature audience such as 16 and overs. The console its self is usually played by an older age range between 13 to somewhere in their 30's and both females and males play on this console, so the advert is for both genders not specifically just one of them. The advert will contain zombies, blood, crime action and violence. most mature people are attracted to these sorts of games and this is what we took into consideration.

I then went on to UKIE and found out the typical target audience for most game consoles. Within the UK there's an estimate of fifteen to twenty four year old males purchase and play video games which is 58%. This then leaves the 42% of female gamers in the UK with their age range consisting of a similar age range. This means that the advert would have to rope both genders with maybe a compelling narrative for the short advert story. Most gamers put a lot of money and time into the gaming so we would have to make sure that we sell the PS4 to make it sound like its the best console out there.

Gaming market

I then went onto research the best selling PS4 games and why that is the case. The last of us, Destiny, Grand Theft Auto 5 and Witcher. Its a coincident that they fall into the same genre for games. They are all pretty much action, blood, gore or horror games. In these games you are playing as a main character or you flick between them throughout the games when you reach a certain point. This also fits into the different genres that we have come up with to put into the advert. Those four games also have their own unique stories that no other game has which makes it more special and different. This is what ropes the audience in. This is proven as they are the most popular games they have sold on the PS4 console. Most gamers buy and play these games for their incising storyline and also to get to know the characters. That's the same concept for our advert, showing them the story but through 4 different perspectives. Kieren uploaded a survey onto Facebook for people to fill it in and the overall response was that people tend to be inspired by the visuals of a game as well as a compelling storyline, tense action and intriguing characters. These are the things we will think about putting into the advert. Rememberable characters that people will hopefully love and remember in an advert.
In addition to this, this advert should be played in the watershed (After 9pm) because of the graphic images and who it is aimed at in general.

Mood board

The mood board I have made shows the ideas we will include in the advert. These are the different themes that we will have, being dark for certain scenes. Each picture shows the key details that we wish to use for the PS4 advert. For example in the fantasy universe, our main character will play the role of a wizard, whilst the image of the pistol shows the props that are involved. When editing we will include simple effects to make it look more like a gaming advert. I know Kieren has a strong knowledge of editing images and is also good at editing footage. I feel he would be able to edit the images for the advert into the background to make it look more realistic.

Me and Kieren both had different ideas from the start. Kierens ideas is having four different worlds a character goes through. Theres four different genres the single character goes through. This is the main idea we have gone with because it makes more sense and looks more exciting. My idea was to make the advert become a 3D/ virtual reality. I wanted it to be more like your in the advert and wanted to add the new technology that has recently been created. We decided Kierens would be better and sounded more fun for the advert. Plus we are able to create that with the technology and software we have. Whereas the 3D/ vitual reality wouldn't be possible to make with the software and technology we have available to us.

Constraints

Time

The overall length of the advert should only be 1 minute long exactly. As there is four different worlds. The first twenty seconds will be the universal dangers such as zombies etc. The next thirty three seconds of the advert will be the rest of the genres. This then leaves the remaing seven seconds of the advert for the PS4 motto along with the title and logo. I think the overall production to make the advert will take about 1 week and a half. That's for the filming and editing to be done. For the filming we will be taking a few shots from different angles to make it more interesting. Also to see which one would be the best footage.

Cost

If we were paying for anything in the production the overall cost we estimated was £75. This would include food and drinks, props and software. Food and drinks wouldn't be necessary as we wont be filming all day for us to be hungry or thirty. If that was the case im sure there would be shops near by for us to get this or even provide it ourselves. Including the camera and accessories to go with that it would cost around £200. Also the actors and extras were taken into consideration for the main budget of this production.

Personnel

Me and Kieren are working on this project together. We have both agreed that we will work together and have equal contribution to the production. We will help each other if we get stuck as we both have different strengths and weaknesses. I am experienced and have a better knowledge of working cameras. This is also something I want to go into when im older as I enjoy working with them and how the income can turn out to be. Kieren has offered that he would be the actor in the advert so we wouldn't need an extras or actors in the production as that is all we need.
When is comes to editing the footage, Kieren has a stronger strength for this. I will be working along side Kieren for him to ask me for my opinion and maybe things I would want to change personally. This shows that we are equally contributing to the project as we are both doing 2 of the main parts for it. If in doubt we may get other students to come and help us being extras for the adverts, whether that's being a zombie or criminals.

Resources

We have access to all film equipment such as the camera, tripods and other things as the microphones. The college also provides the necessary software that we will need and be using. As I have younger brothers we have some access to some props and costumes but not for all scenes of the advert. We may have to invest in some or maybe makes some with face paint or using clothing and adding detail such as belts or paint. Just so then we get close to the look we want. All we need to focus on is getting the correct props for us to make the scenes possible or else we may have to rethink.

Legal and Ethical considerations, Ethical code, Code of practice and copyright

When we are deciding our props that we are going to be using appropriate weapons. As our genres are blood and minor gore we don't want to be using really knifes or guns. Most professional filming companies are able to use these but they are loaded and they are used by stunt actors. The scenes that we are also thinking about are the violence scenes. We don't want to offend anyone so we have to be careful that we don't offend or insult multiple races, cultures or religions. We want to advert to be appealing to everyone who comes across it. As the gaming industry is very big and is still growing, the target audience will of course consist with people across the globe who come from many different backgrounds and races. This is why we really want to do our best to make the advert appealing and not to offend them in any way. We still want to make it intense and fun to watch.

The codes of practice in the advertising industry states that the advert must not be offensive or biased towards the ethical and moral values of the public. The advert should not encourage those for acts of violence, support towards illegal crime, homophobia, discrimination or others and stereotyping which can not feature in the video. When making our advertisement we shall not include anything of the sort I have just listed below. As we have mention it will contain action and horror but this will only be minor. We would not go past the target audiences acceptable boundaries. If we were to make the advert that would of been shown on TV it would make the brand look unreliable and may cause the decrease in sales. We want to make sure the children or elders are not exposed to the advert, this is why we would make the advert as light as possible so they wouldn't take anything bad away from it.

Copyright. In the advert itself we will not be using any music in the background as this would be or could be classed as copyright. If we both decide to use music in the background we would find something on archive so that we know that its safe and not copyrighted. Back up to the plan we discussed the different games that we had researched and that were popular in the gaming industry. We would not be able to hint at any existing games as this would also be classed as copyright. We will not be promoting them in any shape or form. We are just stating that the games we chose are the same genre that we will be portraying. The rules of copyright claim that we can not feature other company brands, logos and products unless it relevant to the video you are making. Such as the controller symbols. These will be shown when they go through to a different world to show you that the colours relate to the controller the player would be holding. For PS4 we will not be preforming any form or product placement such as: drinks, clothing, cars, jewellery and any other products that can be used to promote other companies as we don't have the permission to do this and they haven't asked us to.

Evaluation:
My input to the production was transport, camera operator, make up, discussed ideas, focus and helped pick out music for the advert. Firstly, we discussed our ideas and produced our focus group on what we will be producing for our advert. We made the focus group with Gemma, Courtney, Ralph and me and Kieren were also there. I also transported me and Kieren from college to the location which was his house to film. The equipment I also transported to the location was his Sony shoulder camera which we also used to film our advert. I was working part of the team with Kieren being the actor and me being the camera operator and the make up artist.
We and Kieren at the start of the production worked well as a team. Agreeing on ideas and making storyboards together. Also when it came down to filming we both agreed we would do things together and help each other if we got stuck on camera angles for example. When it came down editing we both had our disagreements as we both decided to edit together but they didn't happen due to a lack of communication. When producing the rest of the production we came to a decision that we both agreed on when the full thing was edited. We thought it would be for the best and would work well in the future.
I things i think we should of improved on is communication. Like i said when it came down to editing he didn't really listen to what i wanted to add into it or to make it better. I think in the long run it would of been better if we didn't work together as a team and work by our self's. Due to the deadline this wasn't possible and we had to carry on how we were and just had to deal with what we had at the time.
